OVERVIEW

The Director of Tennis is responsible for the delivery of a comprehensive tennis program for the club’s members and their guests. The position reports to the General Manager, and works closely with the Tennis Committee to deliver a comprehensive, best-in-class, private-club program.

THE CLUB

In 1935 the Gulf Stream Bath and Tennis Club was originated and built by Mrs. Howard Phipps. It was her idea to provide for the residents of this small village and their families, a community center offering swimming, tennis and luncheon facilities. The club is located on a secluded and pristine stretch of coastline, abutting the Atlantic Ocean. In 1952 a group of winter residents recognized the need for a private beach, tennis, and social club. After lengthy negotiations, a non-profit syndicate was organized to purchase the property.

In 1990, the membership voted to permit the construction of a new clubhouse. The new clubhouse was completed in less than nine months. In 2017, after nearly twenty-seven years of weathering beachfront conditions, and due to evolving usage of the facility, a complete remodel of the Clubhouse began with a Grand re-opening held in November of the same year. Members were welcomed into a more efficient square footage with multiple dining and entertaining opportunities, and expanded usage of the upstairs veranda which overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. As part of the overall site plan work of the 2017 renovation, the Green House was converted into an Activity and Fitness Center, with a patio for court side viewing, and the Tennis Center was renovated, all of which further enhanced the member experience.

Today, in addition to a variety of exceptional dining and social offerings, the club’s 450 members are offered an invigorating, year-round calendar of tennis events and programs. The club’s Fitness and Activity Center sits adjacent to the club’s five Har-Tru tennis courts which are maintained with the support of a state-of-the-art HydroCourt subsurface irrigation system.

THE POSITION

The Director of Tennis (DoT) reports to the General Manager, and works with other club staff to ensure the successful operation of the Tennis program and the Fitness Center. The DoT helps develop goals for the program, and works closely with the Tennis Committee to plan an annual calendar of events and programs designed to engage the membership and energize the program. The position is year-round, with a higher number of members active at the club during ‘the season’, from November through April.

The current Director of Tennis is retiring after 28 years. The new Director of Tennis will assume responsibility for a highly regarded program which currently includes a Pro Am Tournament and multiple Member-Guest Tournaments. The new DoT will apply a renewed focus on the development of more group instruction offerings, additional youth programming – particularly during holiday and summer vacation periods, an enhanced variety of pro shop offerings, and the overall cleanliness and maintenance of the facility.

The DoT will design a variety of instructional offerings for members of all playing abilities, including private lessons, and group clinics which focus on strategy as well as individual improvement. League tennis is not played at the club. The DoT must be experienced and accomplished in executing successful member tournaments and social mixers, and will work with the Tennis Committee to promote a variety of activities for all playing levels.

In addition to the normal governance responsibilities within a member-owned, private club, the tennis committee’s role in supporting the DoT is to:

  • Assist the Director of Tennis in developing programs, clinics and social mixers suitable for the various skill levels and age groups within the Club.

  • Establish rules and formats for tournaments and championships.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of a communication campaign to advertise and promote tennis at the Club.

  • Assist the Director of Tennis and General Manager with the development of the Club’s Annual Tennis Calendar.
